How to roast green coffee beans?
There are two techniques to achieve freshly roasted coffee.
- To roast it in an oven.
- Using a coffee roasting machine.
The other manners include using a pan, or a grill.
How to prepare coffee beans in the oven
This is a DIY method, because the oven is not a generally suitable equipment for coffee roasting. But you can use it to roast your green coffee beans. Also beware, it is a slow and messy way of coffee beans roasting and you would most likely end up with a smoky and messy room.
What You Need:
- An oven.
- Unroasted Coffee Beans.
- 2 metal colanders.
- Oven tray.
- Mitts, and.
- Air-tight container for storage.
- First, open all the windows and doors to let out the smoke. Then, preheat the kitchen oven to about 500F.
- Put a sheet of baking paper over the over tray and streach the beans (only one layer deep).
- Place the tray on the middle shelf of your oven.
- Listen for a crack. This crack is the first of two cracks and it should happen in about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Remove your roasted beans if you want a light-toned roast.
- The second crack (which should be about 1 minute after the first crack) is for a medium roast and a continued roasting would result in a deep burnt roast.
- Transfer the fresh-roasted coffee beans to a colander and leave for 12 hours to eliminate the CO2 and chaff.
How to roast using a coffee roasting machine?
If you are a coffee enthusiast, we recommend getting your dedicated machine because it is less messy and easier to use.
What You Need:
- Coffee Roasting Machine.
- Hand Mitts.
- Green Coffee Beans.
- The same as with oven, open up all windows and doors because roasting coffee is a smoky job.
- Turn on your machine and add the beans according to the operating manual of your machine (all machines work differently).
- If your machine is automated, you can sit back, relax, and wait for crack sounds. If it is not, set your coffee roasting temperature to about 500F.
- Listen for crack sounds 1 and 2. Turn off the machine immediately you are satisfied with your roast.
- Cool down your roasted beans and leave for 12 hours.
