Can You Reuse Coffee Filters?

Using coffee filter.

There are all sorts of coffee filters to choose from. Do you use a reusable filter, or prefer using a paper filter? Paper filters are disposable; some say one paper filter is to one brew. However, this can dramatically increase your waste per week. Therefore, the question is: can you reuse coffee filters?

The Paper Coffee Filter

Paper coffee filters are perhaps the most common coffee filter. You can buy paper coffee filters in packs and are the cheapest of all coffee filters.

Paper coffee filters are sturdy. The tightly-woven strands ensure that little to no sediment will make it to your cup of coffee. Paper filters are also either bleached or unbleached. Bleached coffee filters are white, whilst unbleached coffee filters have a natural brown color. Bleached coffee filters are processed in chlorine and can be damaging to the environment if not properly disposed of.

Cleaning up with a paper coffee filter is quick and easy. Simply pull on the edges of the filter to lift it out of the basket, and dispose of it along with the used grounds.

Reusing paper coffee filter.

Brewing with a paper coffee filter has minimal effect on the strength and flavor of the coffee. Typically, a batch of coffee brewed using a paper filter is light, clean, and with a crisp taste.

Unless you are using a coffee filter designed specifically for multiple uses, this question has probably crossed your mind more than once. As much as possible you would want to reduce the amount of waste you produce. Reusable coffee filters are quite pricey, so why not start with the more affordable paper coffee filters?

Paper coffee filters are typically designed as single-use items. However, some brands have sturdier filters that can withstand up to seven uses. Paper coffee filters can quickly fill our garbage bins, but that does not have to be the case anymore.

The good news: you can reuse paper coffee filters, after all! The taste of your coffee will tell you when it’s time to switch to a new filter. A filter due for a change makes burnt coffee.

How to Reuse Coffee Filters

The life of a coffee filter can be extended for up to four uses. To maximize each use, empty the filter of used grounds and dry it out for 24 hours or more. The filter is now ready for the next reuse.
